Gamers Beware – The Feds May Be Watching
A newly released report sent to Congress by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) reveals a project named Reynard that will probe the virtual world. The project is described as “a seedling effort to study the emerging phenomenon of social (particularly terrorist) dynamics in virtual worlds and large-scale online games and their implications for the intelligence community.” Researchers will establish "baseline normative behaviors" in the virtual world based on observation and publicly available data. "Terrorist use of the internet at the moment relies on password protected forums," admits Roderick Jones, a former special branch officer. He doubts terrorists use or would use large online games such as Second Life and World of Warcraft. So why put so much effort into them? "All of the major terrorist treatises have been distributed through the internet so taking it to a virtual world with multi-player role games is really an easy step." said Andrew Cochran, founder of the Counterterrorism Foundation. "We can see groups emerging in cyber spaces and virtual communities that would be wholly virtual," said Jones. "They would organize and radicalize in virtual worlds and attack using cyber methods without becoming a real world presence in any real way." What does all this mean for your average gamers? Probably not much, assuming you aren’t engaging in “suspicious activities” – whatever those are supposed to be. To me it sounds like a simple extension of the Big Brother like supervision already occurring. Since email, instant messaging, phone calls, and website activity are already being monitored; virtual worlds are the next logical step according to our power hungry leaders. Terrorism is once more being used in an effort to scare us into allowing it. So gamers beware, the Feds may be watching! |
