Internet Blackouts: What's the Message?

Speculation abounds concerning the recent ‘cutting’ of undersea internet cables. While the initial reports cited ships as the cause of the damage, new information has revealed this not to be the case. Kahleej Times reported February 3rd that Egypt’s Communication Ministry reviewed video footage from 12 hours before cables were cut, to 12 hours after. No activity was to be seen in the videos. The claim that anchors may have damaged cables is also widely criticized due to the fact that cable locations are ‘no go’ zones. Cables are also buried in the shallower waters to ensure anchor damage does not occur.

A total of five cables have now been damaged, causing internet black outs in swathes of Asia, the Middle East and North Africa. Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Bahrain, Pakistan and India all had similar problems.

As to the real reasons for the damaged cables, many blame one of two reasons.

The first is President Bush’s recent trip to the Middle East where he attempted to rally support against Iran and asked Saudi Arabia to boost oil production. Both requests were ignored. Many believe the cable cuts were in response to the lack of support the US has in the Middle East and this is a warning.

A second reason is the recent actions of Iran, which now requires that all its oil and related products are traded in non-dollar currencies. Saudi Arabia has hinted that it may soon do the same if Iran’s actions yield positive results. The cutting of the cables is a clear message to those involved not to replace the US dollar. This is probably the most plausible of the two arguments.

Assuming the dollar is no longer used as an oil exchange currency, it is inevitable that the US economy would slide into recession faster than it already is. The dollar would not do well in such a situation, and could lead to a worldwide ripple effect with other countries following suit.

Whether either of these two beliefs is true is yet to be known for sure. It is certain however, that the cutting of 5 cables in quick succession is anything but coincidence. This was an orchestrated attack on communication for the countries involved.

Perhaps more frightening is the similarities to the past. German undersea communication cables were cut by the British at the beginning of World War Two. Is this a message of threat, of coming force? If so who will be the attacked, and who will be attacking?

We can only wait and see. Let’s hope for the best.
