Iraq A Successful Endeavor Says Cheney
Two news stories caught my eye today, both completely at odds with each other. First was a new report released by the Red Cross citing the growing humanitarian crisis occurring in Iraq. Five years after the invasion of the country, millions are faced with basic health care needs and a lack of clean water. "Actually, in most of the country, it is among the most critical in the world. Because of the conflict, millions of Iraqis have insufficient access to vital medical care, health care, water and sanitation," said ICRC Middle East spokeswoman, Dorothea Krimitsas. “One's attention should not be distracted from the continuing plight of millions of civilians who have been left to their own devices and who continue to be often deliberately targeted, killed, injured on a daily basis in fighting and attacks." The second story instilled in me a mixture of sadness and outright anger. Vice President Cheney declared the invasion of Iraq a “successful endeavor” as reported by Reuters. Cheney is currently visiting Baghdad and evidently believes the situation to have improved since his last visit. "If you look back on those five years it has been a difficult, challenging but nonetheless successful endeavor ... and it has been well worth the effort," he said, adding "I was last in Baghdad 10 months ago and I sense, as a result of the progress that has been made since then, phenomenal changes in terms of the overall situation." He made the statements on the same day a female suicide bomber killed 40 people and wounded 71. With over four million Iraqis displaced, tens if not hundreds of thousands of Iraqis killed (mostly civilian), thousands of U.S. soldiers killed, continuing violence, an emerging humanitarian crisis, and common practices of torture and abuse of detainees, this war can hardly be called successful. The war has cost the United States $500 billion, and the final bill could exceed $1 trillion. And let’s not forget the blight it has put on the face of America, this war will not be remembered kindly by the international community. To say that the situation has improved in Iraq is one thing, but to label it an all out ‘success’ is simply outrageous and in my opinion, repulsive. From Cheney’s point of view though, perhaps it really is a success. After all, he helped create a war that was based entirely on lies, has made himself and his friends ungodly amount of money, has committed war crimes, and has yet to face any repercussions for it. Meanwhile, the American people put their tails between their legs and look away. I guess if I had as little disregard for humanity and morality as the Bush Administration, I’d be smiling too. There’s just no better time to be a conniving, greedy, disgusting politician than now is there? Keep slapping those “Proud to be an American” bumper stickers on your cars America. There’s really no clearer way to show the world how completely apathetic and uncaring we’ve become – unless say, there were some unfounded war killing thousands upon thousands for no reason other than greed. That would illustrate it much more completely. |
